New Resolve?

Most people fall into two camps: those who make resolutions and those who don’t. Table Top and Home co-owner, Keva, aligns with the “don’t” group, and is proud of it. Instead, she aspires to follow the thirteen virtues of Benjamin Franklin. Feeling a bit rakish I’d never heard of these virtues, I spent yesterday reading up on our forefather’s attempt at moral perfection. You know what? He was spot-on. I’m thinking my resolution list seems pretty trivial compared to his aspirations. Tell us about your resolutions on our Facebook page. We’ll pick a lucky winner after the new year for a fancy treat.

I’m afraid to say it, but our staff loves Alexis Bitter jewelry so much I’m afraid they’re going to buy it all before our customers can. The other day I got an email from our dear Whitney that a new shipment had arrived and the sales staff were caught up in the beauty of it all – trying things on, parading around. What will the customers have to buy, I giggled. No fear, all items are here and accounted for and our sales staff is ready to part with the collection if they must. They might cry, but that’s okay. They’re here for you, after all.

Sferra turns 120

We are thrilled to be celebrating the 120-year “birthday” of one of our favorite vendors, Sferra.

Legend has it that Sferra’s owner, Paul Hooker, used to keep inventory in a safe behind his desk. Vendors from boutiques would visit him and ask for items and he’d never fail to produce them. Not only do they take care of their clientele with amazingly crafted bed and table linens, they take care of their boutique vendors (and there’s nearly 600 of us all over the world!). We love them. We know you do, too!

The One With Jennifer Aniston

The word on the street, at least from Ruben’s (our rep from Scandia Down) street, is so juicy I can hardly stand it:

So Jennifer Aniston was staying the night over at Ellen and Porsche’s house (um, I want to be invited to THAT sleepover!) and fell in love with the Scandia feather bed in her guest room. Because, really, who wouldn’t? Those things are like HEAVEN on a bed.

So she did what any sensible person would do: she up and called her favorite retailer in Beverly Hills and bought one for every bed in every house she owns.

So, yeah. That’s pretty cool.

Eco2Cotton

Have you ever wondered what happens to the fabric scraps created from industrial textiles?

Yeah, me neither.

But then I heard about Eco2Cotton and it got me thinking: what does happen to all those fabric scraps? Turns out, textile scraps often end up in the landfill. And the folks at In2Green wanted to do something about it.

They started reclaiming some of these scraps figured out how to separate colors and reduce yarns to cotton fluff, which is then respun into yarn or thread to make new products! Pretty snazzy, isn’t it? (You can read more about Eco2Cotton process here.)

Turkish Cotton Towels

I’m here today to change your life. No, I don’t have the secret to world peace. I’m working on it. Until the whole “world peace” thing comes through, you’ll have to settle for the next best thing (to your skin, anyway). It’s Turkish cotton. And it is has changed how I dry off.

Now, why would cotton from Turkey (the Aegean region, specifically) be so wonderful – more wonderful than much-praised Egyptian cotton? Or American cotton? It’s the extra-long fibers of the cotton in that region. Using longer fiber cotton in spinning yarn means fewer joins. See? Fewer joins results in stronger, smoother cotton threads.

Instead of piling the cotton for a fluffy towel, Turkish cotton towels are flat. And while they are soft and absorbent, they don’t take in too much moisture and they dry more quickly. What’s more, it becomes softer, fluffier, and more absorbent with successive washings. We think it provides the perfect balance between absorbency and softness, making it the best cotton for towels.

Deborah Rhodes Placemat Love

We here at TT&H love the table top section of the store. It’s where we started, after all. And our Deborah Rhodes 15″ circular placemats are the backbone of our table top collection. Durable, beautiful and available in so many vivid colors, it’s not hard to see why we are so in love with Deborah Rhodes. These mats are made of a super-cool nylon fiber. The fine quality of the braid used, in combination with the fiber content, provides superior performance. Cleaning up is a breeze: just wipe clean with a sponge. They always lay flat. Perfect!

Lenny Wilkins Foundation

Since 1970, Seattle’s Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic has provided medical, dental and mental health in Seattle’s central district to all families regardless of their ability to pay. Families receive care in an atmosphere of warmth, acceptance and respect.

So when former Sonic basketball star Lenny Wilkins and his wife walked into the clinic forty years ago, they knew they’d found a special place. It became the rallying point for Wilkins and his wife, who created the Wilkins Foundation to support the work of the clinic.

So when the Wilkins Foundation asked TT&H to contribute to the annual Lenny Wilkens Foundation Celebrity Classic Weekend, their biggest fundraiser of the year, we just had to step up. We were thrilled to donate to their charity auction, to be held on August 12. Yay! We love good causes and we love that the Wilkins Foundation has raised over $2.5 million since 1970.

Now, we know our TT&H family is both generous and likes to have fun so we have some good news and some better news. Although tickets to the celebrity weekend are nearly sold out (the golf tourney is sold out but the auction has a few seats left) we think this is good news for the foundation. Way to go! The better news is that this year, the foundation’s 40th, they have a swell campaign running: $40 for 40 years.

A contribution of $40 will ensure the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic will continue to:

- Provide much needed well-child visits for children 0-2 years old.
- Give families access to critical dental care.
- Deliver a variety of mental health services.
- Provide access to chronic disease programs focused on asthma, diabetes and sickle cell anemia.
- Continue mentoring and education programs for low income families.

We’d love it if you wanted to show your love by supporting the clinic, too! The $40 for 40 campaign can be found here. We thank you and we know the foundation thanks you. But you know who really thanks you? Those kids and families at the clinic!
