Simon Pearce Family on Nightly News!

We here at Table Top and Home were thrilled to see this editorial piece about Kevin Pearce, son of the famed glassblower Simon Pearce, highlighted on the NBC Nightly News last night. You might recall Kevin was seriously injured while preparing for hid bid at Olympic gold in snowboarding two years ago in Beijing.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

We’re proud vendors of the Simon Pearce line and can’t wait to see what this amazing family comes up with next!

New Resolve?

Most people fall into two camps: those who make resolutions and those who don’t. Table Top and Home co-owner, Keva, aligns with the “don’t” group, and is proud of it. Instead, she aspires to follow the thirteen virtues of Benjamin Franklin. Feeling a bit rakish I’d never heard of these virtues, I spent yesterday reading up on our forefather’s attempt at moral perfection. You know what? He was spot-on. I’m thinking my resolution list seems pretty trivial compared to his aspirations. Tell us about your resolutions on our Facebook page. We’ll pick a lucky winner after the new year for a fancy treat.

Get Down (with Down, of course!)

Q: What does fill power mean in down comforters and pillows?

A: Fill power is a measurement of efficiency; the higher the fill power number, the better the down and the greater the insulating value. The fill power measurement represents the number of cubic inches filled by an ounce of down.

Fill power is directly related to the size of the down cluster. Large down clusters occupy more space than smaller down clusters. The higher the fill power, the larger the clusters, and thus, the more air that is trapped between the clusters.  The trapped air is what gives down its insulating properties.

The size of the bird and the climate in which it lives, determines the size of its down cluster. The colder the climate, the larger the down cluster required to keep the bird warm. For example, it is colder in Canada than it is in Hungary. Therefore, the birds need larger down clusters in Canada to stay warm.

We carry luxury bedding from Scandia Down. Now that we are wrapping up this holiday season, it’s time to think about more practical matters: cold winter nights. Even though our Pacific northwest days are slowing getting longer again, we’ve got three months of winter ahead. Scandia Down is what gets me through the winter: it doesn’t really matter how dark or gloomy it is outside as long as I know I can curl up inside a warm bed.

And stay tuned for our White Sale, coming up in the new year. Details soon…

That’s a Wrap! Holiday Gift Wrapping
+ a Contest

We absolutely love Remodelista’s recent blog about the careful presentation of gifts – this holiday season or anytime, really:

Gift wrapping is one of the easiest ways to personalize a gift. In Japan, the art is known as tsutsumi. In Kunio Ekiguchi’s book Gift Wrapping: Creative Ideas from Japan, tsutsumi is described as the “gentle concealment” of the object. “Just as one helps a friend into a coat carefully and courteously, a gift should be wrapped tenderly and conscientiously.”

We take gift presentation seriously at Table Top & Home and do it the old-fashioned way. We start by covering our boxes with a beautiful embossed paper. Then we place a sticker logo sealing the inside tissue and tie each gift with a real grosgrain ribbon. Each gift has a gift enclosure card, completing the perfect presentation!

Contest alert! We’d love to see your most beautiful wrapping job this season. Post a picture of your masterpiece to our Facebook page and you just might win a holiday treat of your own!

A Stamp of Excellence: Match Pewter

Did you know that tin, the primary metal in pewter, is completely non-toxic? Pewter is an alloy (a combination of base metals) that is made of tin, copper and antimony. Just to be clear: there is no lead in Match pewter! To truly be pewter, an alloy must contain at least 92% tin. Match Italian Pewter contains 95% of the highest quality tin. Hence, the “95″ that is stamped into each piece of Match Italian Pewter.

All Match pewter is still hand-stamped by the artisans who make it. This is stamped in the metal as the contributory mark of excellence.

Caring for Pewter – Match’s Repair Program

I posted earlier this week about a lovely cocktail set from Match. A curious reader posed some great questions: what happens if one of those beautiful martini glasses break? Why invest in something so fine but so delicate when they’ll be used with some regularity? And isn’t pewter difficult to clean?

Curious reader, great questions!

First of all, pewter is actually super easy to clean: just hand wash with liquid soap and towel dry. Yes, it is THAT easy. Among fine table ware pieces, your pewter will be some of your most low-maintenance items.

Secondly, if one of your beautiful MATCH martini glasses does break, they have an economical replacement program. They know stuff happens and they can fix it when it does! Brilliant!

Just let us know if you should ever need help with getting your MATCH products repaired. We’d be happy to help! Give us a call: 425.454.7322.

We hope we’ll see you this holiday season, either online at tabletopandhome.com or in person. Our store is located near Bellevue Square Mall, on Bellevue Way NE just south of NE 12th Street.
